🗳️ Cameroon Bishop Calls for Respect of Ballots After Contested Presidential Election

Yaoundé, Cameroon — October 19, 2025

As tensions rise following Cameroon’s October 12 presidential election, a prominent Catholic bishop has urged political leaders and citizens alike to respect the will of the people and uphold the sanctity of the ballot box.

Bishop Paul Lontsié-Keuné, of the Diocese of Bafoussam, made the appeal during Sunday Mass, emphasizing that peace and democracy can only thrive when citizens trust in transparent elections. His remarks came amid reports of protests, allegations of irregularities, and uncertainty surrounding the final results.

“The ballot is sacred. It is the voice of the people and must be respected,” Bishop Lontsié-Keuné said. “True leadership listens to the people, not to manipulation or fear. Cameroon’s future depends on justice and truth.”

Election observers have noted delays in result announcements and scattered unrest in major cities, while both ruling and opposition parties claim early victories. The National Elections Commission has called for patience, promising transparency in the verification process.

Government spokesperson Rene Emmanuel Sadi reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to due process:

“Our institutions are strong enough to handle this moment. We encourage all Cameroonians to remain calm while the official process continues.”

Cameroon’s Catholic Church, one of the most trusted institutions in the country, has historically played a mediating role during political crises. Its call for restraint and integrity echoes growing appeals from civil society for credible governance and peaceful dialogue.

“The church stands for peace,” added Bishop Lontsié-Keuné. “Let us not destroy our nation for power. Let truth prevail, and let every vote count.”
